GRuMPS on Sky News, July 2026
Leah Hopf on hosting Sky News at the Leverett field site
During July 2026, the GRuMPS team was excited to host Tom Clarke and Dean Massey of Sky News. Tom and Dean accompanied us for the first three days of our field season at the off-ice camp near Leverett Glacier, witnessing the setup of camp, the installation of a CryoEgg receiver, biogeochemistry sampling, and a trip onto the ice.
We enjoyed the opportunity to share our science with Tom and Dean (and their wider Sky News audience) and to help execute their ambitious filming ideas, including attaching a camera to a helicopter sling, filming the inside of a cryoconite hole, and lowering a camera into a moulin.
The photos, videos, and interviews collected by Tom and Dean culminated in a 10-minute feature highlighting the GRuMPS scientific goals, plus a written article and several short social media clips about topics ranging from science to camp life (links here and here). The coverage was run on Sky News live television and is published on the Sky News website and YouTube (links above).
Thank you to Tom, Dean, and the Sky News team for their work to understand our research and share it with a non-scientific audience – and for their excellent company at camp.
